We have a new neighbor!
I spent about a half hour on Sunday with our new neighbor, getting to know her a little bit. She was very shy at first, and it took a little patience on my part to get the relationship started, but... Once you get to know her, she's really great. However, I'm still not sure what her name is...

This is our new neighbor! (before she and I became friends)
Ever since we moved into our home 11+ years ago, there has been a horse, or sometimes two, living behind us. Once, we even had a little foal back there. But about a year or so ago, the horse who had been there the longest (she was very, very old) died. The pasture sat empty last summer, and it was very sad to see. I always enjoyed giving the horse(s) an apple or two now and then.
Well, a couple weeks ago a new horse moved in! She was very vocal the first week she was there; we would hear her in the mornings just whinnying and carrying on in the barn and corral. But this week she seems to have adjusted to her new surroundings, and she's been out in the pasture grazing the past few mornings. It's always so peaceful to look out your back window and see a horse grazing contentedly. The romantic in me loves to stand and daydream when I see a scene like that.
Well, Sunday I decided to see if I could make a friend out of our new neighbor. So I cut up a week-old apple and put it in a bowl - normally I would just hold it in my hand, but seeing as I didn't know this horse at all, I didn't want to chance getting my fingers bitten! She was pretty close to the fence when I first went out, but she did a really good job of completely ignoring me! She just slowly wandered around, grazing, but always looking up at me to see what I was doing or if I was a threat. I just stood there, holding the bowl of apple through the fence, and waited. She wandered this way and that, slowly making her way closer to the fence. Finally, curiosity got the best of her, and she walked straight up to me, sniffed the apples, and proceeded to chomp away! She even tried to eat the bowl - ouch! Then she sniffed me a little and let me pet her just a bit.
Hopefully, our new neighbor and I can be friends for a while. I look forward to getting to know her better!
