So, I thought I'd do a few short blogs here and there about some everyday food items that I make myself. These items are fantastic, because you usually have the ingredients on hand, and, when you make them yourself, you know exactly what is in them!
I cannot take credit for coming up with any of these "recipes" myself. I did just what you're doing - I looked up online how to do it! But it was so long ago that I can't remember where or from whom or when I got the recipe, so I can't properly give credit where credit is due at this point. (Sorry!)
I'll start with something super easy - brown sugar. I know it's very easy to just buy a bag at the store, but if you're picky about what goes into your family's tummies, making it yourself is a great alternative. Also, if you know how to whip up a batch, you'll never run out of brown sugar again!
I start with organic evaporated cane juice crystals from our local bulk food store. I can get 10-pound bags there, and they sell it very inexpensively. Measure out how many cups of sugar you would like to make. Then all you do is add 1 tablespoon of molasses for each cup of sugar. I think most any molasses will do... except maybe blackstrap. I usually end up mixing it with my hands, because using a spoon doesn't work. The molasses just ends up clumping up and doesn't get mixed. Mix it thoroughly, until there are no molasses or sugar clumps left. And... ta-da! You have your very own brown sugar! Easy, eh?
It's not rocket science, and maybe I'm the last homemaker on planet Earth to realize how easy it is to do this, but I hope I've helped a few of you, at least!
